127 Hours

Film #306

Title: 127 Hours (2010)

Starring: James Franco, Amber Tamblyn and Kate Mara

Dir: Danny Boyle

Basic Synopsis (from IMDb): A mountain climber becomes trapped under a boulder while canyoneering alone near Moab, Utah and resorts to desperate measures in order to survive.

My Mini Review:

It’s amazing how captivating this film is, considering most of the film focuses on only one character. Based on the true story of climber Aron Ralston, the film effectively explores what he went though during such a harrowing ordeal. The way the story is told and shown, the viewer feels trapped along with him, and cheers him on in his efforts to try and free himself (and rejoices with every little victory).

Cinematically, I thought the camera work was excellent, really making use of such confined spaces, and exploring all the possibilities of different angles. I thought the direction was strong and it was very well edited – it has somewhat of a stylized look without going overboard. The acting was great by Franco (who was nominated for an Oscar – making a total of 6 Oscar noms for the film). A great film, a great (true) story and very well done.

Overall Rating: 5/5

About farronfilms

Hello there, and thank you for taking the time to read my ramblings on film. I love everything about filmmaking and try to look at (and review) films on a more aesthetic level, and really "judge" it for what it is (not necessarily if I personally like it). If you’d like to send me a suggestion to add to my viewing list, please don’t hesitate to email me at farron34@yahoo.com and I’d be more than happy to talk film with you; I’d especially love to hear from any independent filmmakers, as I’d be honored to review your films!
