In the House

Film #290

Title: In the House (Dans la Maison) ( 2012)

Starring: Fabrice Luchini, Ernst Umhauer, Kristin Scott Thomas, Denis Ménochet and Bastien Ughetto

Dir: François Ozon

Basic Synopsis (from IMDb): A high school French teacher gets increasingly drawn into a precocious student’s increasingly transgressive story about his relationship with a friend’s family.

My Mini Review:

Adapted from Juan Mayorga’s play The Boy in the Last Row, the story definitely gets points for originality. Very meta, in a way, the story about creating characters and what good writing is. This film has both, and successfully weaves a tale of fact and fiction that is a delight to watch.

Cinematically, I thought it was well shot, and well paced. I found it to be edited well, and I loved the way it was scored. The direction was solid, and the acting was great. This film was deservedly nominated for six César Awards (the French Oscars), though sadly didn’t win any. A great film, rich in story and a kept me engaged throughout.

Overall Rating: 5/5

About farronfilms

Hello there, and thank you for taking the time to read my ramblings on film. I love everything about filmmaking and try to look at (and review) films on a more aesthetic level, and really "judge" it for what it is (not necessarily if I personally like it). If you’d like to send me a suggestion to add to my viewing list, please don’t hesitate to email me at farron34@yahoo.com and I’d be more than happy to talk film with you; I’d especially love to hear from any independent filmmakers, as I’d be honored to review your films!
